About This Site

The Media Suite Community site is an independent community hub for everyone working with the CLARIAH Media Suite. It is built with Jekyll and hosted on GitHub Pages, with source code available at github.com/beeldengeluid/media-suite-community.

The site is community-maintained. Contributions — whether a guest post, a bug fix, or a design improvement — are welcome via pull request.

About the CLARIAH Media Suite

The Media Suite is a digital research infrastructure developed within the CLARIAH (Common Lab Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) programme in the Netherlands. It provides researchers with integrated access to major Dutch audiovisual and multimedia collections, including:

  • Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision — one of Europe’s largest audiovisual archives, spanning broadcast television and radio from the 1950s to the present
  • Eye Filmmuseum — Dutch and international film heritage
  • DANS — datasets and oral history collections
  • KB, National Library of the Netherlands — digitised newspapers and periodicals aligned with audiovisual material

Research Tools

The Media Suite offers a suite of browser-based and API-accessible tools:

Tool Purpose
Search Full-text and faceted search across collections using automatic speech recognition transcripts, metadata, and linked data
Compare Side-by-side comparison of items, useful for corpus building
Inspect Visualise metadata distributions and temporal patterns
Annotate Create, manage, and export scholarly annotations at item, segment, and collection level
Jupyter integration Access collections programmatically via the Media Suite API within Jupyter notebooks

Technical Background

The Media Suite is built on open standards including IIIF, the W3C Web Annotation Data Model, and linked-data vocabularies aligned with the CLARIAH Annotation Profile (CLARIAH-AP). Source code for the core infrastructure is open source and maintained by Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision in collaboration with academic partners.

CLARIAH

CLARIAH is a large-scale national research infrastructure programme funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and hosted by a consortium of Dutch universities and cultural heritage institutions. Its mission is to provide digital humanities researchers across disciplines with access to large collections of Dutch cultural heritage data and to the tools needed to work with them computationally.
